The Chronicles of Narnia: The Silver Chair

“Revisiting the BBC's 90s adaptation of C. S. Lewis's "The Silver Chair" is a nostalgic but bumpy ride. It's a deeply faithful take on the book that really wears its low budget on its sleeve, feeling a lot more like a stage play than an epic fantasy. Because the camera work is so static and the pacing is incredibly slow, the story loses a lot of its urgency and scale. What should be thrilling action or escape scenes end up feeling like awkward, slow-motion choreography. Still, the show really shines when it comes to the main cast-especially Tom Baker, who absolutely steals the show as the hilariously gloomy Puddleglum, even though the production just made him look like a pale guy instead of the weird amphibian creature described in the books. The kids also do a great job, but unfortunately, the secondary characters and monsters are so over-the-top and theatrical that they ruin any real sense of danger, looking more like tired sports mascots in foam suits than actual threats. Visually, it's definitely a mixed bag. The practical effects, like the oversized sets used for the giants, have a really cool, handmade charm. However, the dreadful green screen, cheap "school play" costumes, and obvious styrofoam rocks are hard to ignore today. The biggest letdown has to be Aslan; despite a fantastic voice performance, the animatronic lion just looks like a creepy, dead-eyed theme park plushie, which completely kills the majesty of his scenes. In the end, the series is a slow-burn, episodic journey that cares way more about moral dilemmas than action, leading up to a pretty rushed and anticlimactic finale. But honestly, despite the dated effects and clunky rhythm, it's still totally worth a watch just to see the genuine heart and effort that went into pulling off TV fantasy before the days of massive budgets and slick CGI.”
