You Are Not Alone

“9/10 "Du er ikke alene" (You Are Not Alone) is a groundbreaking 1978 Danish film that remains significant for its portrayal of young gay love. Set in a boarding school, it follows the developing relationship between two boys, blending themes of youth liberation, political awakening, and LGBTQ acceptance. As one of the earliest major films to address these topics with such openness, it presents love is love in a direct and affirmative manner, incorporating natural nudity, sensuality, and emotional intimacy with care and respect. The connection between Bo and Kim is depicted with innocence and tenderness. Key scenes include the shower scene, notable for its honest and sensitive approach to sensuality, and the final kiss, which serves as a strong statement of acceptance. Although it touches on controversial themes, the film handles them with thoughtful sensitivity and a progressive spirit that prioritizes empathy, acceptance, and human connection over sensationalism. A minor drawback is that certain dialogue-heavy and group scenes extend longer than necessary, which occasionally affects the pacing. Nevertheless, these do not detract substantially from the film's overall importance and quality. This movie is recommended for its historical significance in queer cinema and its thoughtful treatment of these themes.”

“This was about two young guys discovering that they are gay and by the end of the film they make sure their whole school knows it. Honestly, I would have liked it more if the cast were older, but the concept of the story wasn't bad.”
