“The most interesting thing about *狄仁杰之狼人劫* is that it refuses to give you either a clean monster movie or a clean detective story — it gives you both at once. The setup is a Tang-border nightmare: a Silla envoy's Buddha Maiden is ambushed and killed in the night fog of Lie Ma Ling, the scene littered with giant claw prints and cold-blooded copper-masked killers, and the blame immediately lands on the Sumo Mohe tribe's werewolf shaman, pushing Tang and Silla toward war . And the shaman is no hoax — he is genuinely a magical hybrid of wolf and man, one of the rare ones from his Northern tribe to achieve the transformation, rendered through 狼化邪术 and blood-curse imagery rather than a man in a suit . Di Renjie, passing through on other business, takes the case with Sima Xiaodao, the 千牛卫 blade-and-tracking expert, and Physician Duan, the autopsy-and-toxicology specialist — the trio's division of labor ("以智破诡、以刀斩邪、以药破咒") keeping the film from collapsing into one-man-genius theatrics . Director 蓝志伟 stages the fog-drenched night raids and copper-mask skirmishes with real atmosphere, backed by 钟志鹏's production design from the *Mystery of the Phantom Flame* team , and 杜奕衡 plays Di Renjie as a hard-edged official rather than a smug all-knowing sage . What keeps the film from greatness is that the mystery beneath the monster is thinner than the monster. Around the shaman's very real magic sits a manufactured layer — claw prints pressed with custom molds, tribal death squads in copper masks, a 国公 hiding treason behind the folklore — and once Di Renjie starts pulling at the prints' depth, spacing and pressure points, the human culprit is guessable long before the finale . Critics have hammered exactly this: deduction that runs on intuition rather than evidence, no layered reversal structure to match the theatrical *Detective Dee* films, flat villains with thin motives, and a rushed, front-loaded-tense/back-loaded-slack ending where subplots are wrapped in a hurry . The 108-minute runtime stays oddly hurried rather than bloated , leaving the Tang–Silla–Mohe diplomacy sketched rather than felt. And the genre collision cuts both ways: horror fans may want more of the shaman's transformation and blood-curse material , while deduction fans will feel the case never earns its reasoning. Still, this is a more complete package than the flood of Detective Dee web-films it gets lumped in with. It escapes the locked-room template into multi-state border diplomacy , the physical craft is genuinely cinematic — fog-soaked Lie Ma Ling, the cold gleam of the copper masks, clean stunt work over cheap VFX — and the werewolf being real gives the tagline "谁是人,谁是狼" actual teeth: the film's real question is who is more dangerous, the magic-born shaman or the men engineering a war in his shadow . As the second entry of iQIYI's *Detective Dee* trilogy (after July's *督龙锏*, same director and core trio) it works both as a standalone and as franchise glue . If the "no real monster" reviews soured you, disregard that verdict — the wolf is real, the fear is earned, and the letdown is only in the human culprit's thin disguise .”
